The San Pedro Town Council has agreed to meet with the island’s taxi federation to address their concerns. Yesterday, over a hundred cab drivers gathered to protest in front of the Town Hall to demand a meeting with Mayor Gualberto Wally Nunez. The islanders claim that for months they have been raising concerns over issues they say affecting their livelihoods. The island’s federation alleges that they are being prevented from operating at the recently relocated San Pedro Express Water Taxi terminal. Additionally, the group of ten associations claim a group of group of foreign businessmen have partnered to ferry passengers on the island without a taxi license. They say the protest was the result of not being able to get an audience with Mayor Nunez and felt it was their last resort. However, today, Nunez clarified that he had been in communication with the group over their concerns.
Nunez added that while the council has been working with the federation it has been difficult to meet with all the associations as a collective. He also denied that the council has been issuing taxi permits and does not have the authority to do so.
Yesterday’s protest began at the San Pedro Town Hall but was moved to the island’s Central Park after police were called to remove the group
