San Pedro Turbine Delayed but Belize Electricity Limited Optimistic

At the last meeting with the media, the Belize Electricity Limited had given a timeline of June 15 to have the San Pedro Turbine functional.  The inclusion of the San Pedro power supply would add to the total availability in the country when it comes to providing electricity.  According to the Chairman of the Belize Electricity Limited (BEL), Andrew Marshalleck, there were some hiccups in getting the San Pedro turbine up and running.  He noted that for now, hydroelectricity is being strategically used.

Andrew Marshalleck, BEL Chairman: “There’s been some delays again. One of the transformers I understand when it was energized it failed, it exploded or something. Needs to be dealt with, it’ll set us back. I think you’re in a precarious position through July, June, July, it has to be managed very closely. But I think we’ve been managing. The available capacity is very close to what the system is demanding so that the possibility of something going wrong and falling short is real. That’s what I mean by precarious. The way you solve that is you need more capacity because you need redundancy. You need capacity sitting and waiting for when one fails,\ you turn the other one on you fix it, and the supply isn’t disrupted. We don’t have that. We barely have enough to meet demand and that’ll be so until the reservoirs are flush with water again maybe about September with rains. We know the reservoirs are low. We try not to use the dams for power it’s only if something else cuts off then we will turn it on and then it uses the water. So we’re trying to conserve how we use that.”

BEL also receives power from Belcogen and Santander, but these supplies are seasonal.  For instance, with Santander, BEL is only given power during the grinding season.
