Scammers exploit Belizean woman’s hospitalization in Mexico

Belizean woman, Kera Leslie, remains hospitalized tonight in Mexico as the family continues its efforts to raise the money needed to pay the bill at Clinica de Merida, Yucatan.  The bill stands at close to forty thousand US dollars after Leslie had to be admitted at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).  We first aired this story on Sunday with the hope that the family would get the much needed assistance. Today, however, we learnt that scammers have been capitalizing on the situation and have been soliciting donations in her name.  According to the sister, Keeran, the family is yet to set up any event or initiative to raise funds other than through the media.  Leslie was taken to Merida after local doctors were unable to diagnose her symptoms.  Since going to Merida, Kira has been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. She had to undergo multiple diagnostic tests and had to be given a special medication that took the medical bill into the tens of thousands.  Her sister explained that the hospital will not do anything more until the bill is paid in full.  If you are able to assist, you can reach out to the family via WhatsApp at telephone number, (224) 423-6796.  If you would like to make a contribution, you can use the Belize Bank account number, 190-613-010-22-0000.
