Scarlet Macaw Population Threatened by Illegal Poaching

Turning now to other news: the Scarlet Macaw is the largest neotropical species of parrots that is native to rainforests such as Belize’s Chiquibul and Maya Mountains. The exotic bird is also vulnerable to illegal trading and poaching, which is a challenge that conservation organizations in Belize have been battling for many years. According to the Executive Director of Friends for Conservation Development Rafael Manzanero, each year no less than twenty-five macaws die. He explained that this time of year is when scarlet macaws are normally beginning their nesting period, so forest rangers need to ensure that their nesting areas are well protected.

Manzanero added that even the lowest rates of poaching will significantly affect the population. He highlighted that nest poaching carried out by Guatemalans is the leading cause of the population decline in the Chiquibul Forest.
