Schmidt and Lopez walked from charges

Two men, 37 year old Peter Schmidt and 33 year old Carlos Lopez, who were charged with drug trafficking for 5.06 kilograms of cocaine and possession of firearm and ammunition without a gun license, were freed of the charges when they were struck out today by Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford for want of prosecution. Today the arresting officer failed to appear in court and attorney Ellis Arnold submitted that his clients did not have a case to answer and Senior Magistrate Ford upheld the submission and struck it out. According to reports, the main witness did appear but she came to court after the case was struck out. Schmidt and Lopez were arrested and charged in December last year when police intercepted an SUV they were in on Piper Street in Buttonwood Bay and a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a knapsack with the cocaine in it on the back seat. The police reported that they also found a 9 millimeter pistol with 11 rounds of ammunition in the vehicle.
