SEA prepared to go to court over false claims

Attorney Audrey Matura is engaged in another battle after the former executive director of Ya'axché Conservation Trust allegedly made false comments about Matura’s client, Southern Environmental Association (SEA). In a Facebook post, Alamilla claimed that SEA’s Board of Directors is considering using Little Water Caye as collateral for a bank overdraft since covid-19 has caused a financial strain on the NGO.

Attorney Audrey Matura is engaged in another battle after the former executive director of Ya’axché Conservation Trust allegedly made false comments about Matura’s client, Southern Environmental Association (SEA). In a Facebook post, Alamilla claimed that SEA’s Board of Directors is considering using Little Water Caye as collateral for a bank overdraft since covid-19 has caused a financial strain on the NGO. Today, Matura stated that this is an outright lie, and clarified the truth on behalf of her clients.

Audrey Matura, Attorney: “One, Little Water Caye which was the subject of her Facebook post is not part of the protected area system, in Belize we declare certain areas National Parks and so it’s not part. Two, she gave the impression that the board is short and that people who are- because there’s not enough people on the board how can decisions be made, that’s another lie. The board has eight members, the very day she made the post one board member Mr.Steven Christenson resigned, yes one member resigned but the seven remained and the decisions she’s allegedly was taken was before that person resigned. The third lie is it is not true that my clients are putting up Little Water Caye as collateral for any overdraft that’s an absolute lie. Their first step in dealing with the pressures of COVID is to try and cut down cost and you know like everybody is doing they’re trying to see how to save money that’s their first thing, they’re not putting up anything for overdraft. Now having said all of that which three major lies the repercussion of that is that people who don’t know better and because they think she’s credible because of the leadership positions they’ve held there are people who didn’t question the veracity of what she has said and so my clients now have found themselves under attack by people in the conservation community that have always supported them. One funder quickly reached out to them to find out if that was true so they’ve already have to be staving off the negative impact and now another funder has written them wanting a report and a concise detail of what’s going on.”

SEA is prepared to take Alamilla to court, especially since Matura has given her an opportunity to retract the statement but Alamilla refuses to.
