Police Constable Bernard Ical attached to Special Patrol Unit (SPU) has been reported missing.  The officer, who just turned twenty-six years old last week, was on a joint patrol with the Belize Defence Force when he became unaccounted for yesterday.  Reports are that the patrol unit was in the Machaquila area in the Toledo District when he got separated from his peers.  Love News spoke with Police Commissioner Chester Williams for an update on the search.

A release from the Ministry of National Security was sent out at around two o’clock this afternoon indicating that Police Constable Bernard Ical was reported missing by the Patrol Commander yesterday morning at around eight o’clock.  The release laid out the details as we heard from the Police Commissioner including the report where the men were separated.  Commissioner Williams says there are issues that jump out at him regarding this case.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “I have a few issues in respect to how this entire ordeal went down but the matter is being looked into, it is now being treated as a missing person report as the wife of PC Ical has lodged a complaint with the police of the disappearance of her husband. I have spoken to her on the phone this morning and assured her that the Ministry of National Security will do its utmost best to find and return her husband to her alive so that is what our mission is now. So put our best efforts forward to locate the police officer and return him to his family.”

Reporter: Sir you mentioned about having issues and there are several concerns that have been expressed by several parties including the way the entire situation unfolded and basically protocols when you are on patrol especially when you are in those remote areas. Is perhaps your concern surrounding those very same issues ?

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police:Yes of course it surrounds those very same issues and I’m not going to go too much into them, that will be a matter for the BDF to deal with internally to see how or what can be done to be able to ensure that there is no recurrence of this. Our interest right now is to find the police officer hoping that he is okay and try to return him back to his family.”

The team was returning from the Machaquilha outpost to seek safety from Hurricane Nena when Ical went missing.  Love News is following this story.
