The body of 18-year-old Jaswant Brooks was found just after two o’clock this afternoon in a creek just off the George Price Highway around mile six. Brooks was found dressed in only boxers and his body mangled among the mangroves. Authorities first began searching the area yesterday but came up empty handed. Today, the body was found just opposite the area they had searched yesterday. Alejandro Cowo, Head C.I.B spoke to Love News and shared more details regarding the investigation.
Superintendent Alejandro Cowo, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch, Belize City: “This afternoon sometime after 1:30 police received an information of a body seen by the Burton Canal Bridge. As a result we proceeded there where the body was observed inside the mangroves. We got assistance with the Coast Guard and we managed to fish out the body from the mangrove where it was identified by the family members as tha t of the missing persons Jaswant Brooks. Yes there was an injury that was noted at the back of his head. Several information that we are following up from the very day that he was reported missing so we will continue with the investigation. Well it’s something that we really have to look into it as I tell you the investigation is still on going and we will see what we can get from there after.”
Brooks’ body was found in a state of decomposition, four days after leaving home and not returning. As we noted yesterday, the Jaswant’s father had gotten a tip that his son was beaten and thrown in that area. Lavern Olivera, aunt of the deceased, says that she finds it suspicious that the body just suddenly appeared.
Lavern Olivera, Aunt of Deceased: “First thing we thank God that we got the body to have closure but all the while we were working we were working with Mr.Espat because we didn’t have anyone to help us. We went to the station and they just said it has to be a missing person so we decided to call him and ask him to please help us. Me, him and the rest of the family were out here along with the police whole of yesterday and we passed right here and to my belief if that body was here yesterday we would have seen the body floating there. Because the way I saw him swollen up there we would have had to see him because we drove slowly. We really combed the area, combed all here and we didn’t see anything. We don’t know what to do, we just feel sad. We don’t know but we know he is not a child that gives trouble he didn’t have any run ins with the law, he didn’t have no charge, nothing so when we missed him we know that something was wrong with him we knew- we know something was wrong with him because he doesn’t stay out or nothing. So it was so strange only Mr.Espat came to our rescue. The father said that he had a gunshot to his head and they went to the hospital anyway though.”
Brooks had left home on Monday to go to the store on Police Street but didn’t return. The family remains at a lost as to why Jaswant was murdered.
