Second shooting on Gill Street leaves third person hospitalized

Gill Street and the surrounding area continue to be dangerous from last week Thursday when Raymond Arnold, a resident of the area was shot and killed. Over the weekend, three year old Etana Bennett was killed and her mother shot while they slept in their Gill Street home. The National Committee for Families and Children issued a release today condemning the murder of three year old Etana Bennett. The NCFC says “every child has the right to be protected from being hurt and mistreated, in body or mind. These recurring incidents are therefore clear violations of this right of children. We reiterate that children are innocent beings and should never be subjected to these types of situations. They deserve to grow up in a safe environment and to be able to reach their full potential.” The police had erected a checkpoint less than a hundred yards from the home. But tonight we report that another Gill Street resident has been shot. The victim, Eric Tillett is on the road to recovery as his wound is not life threatening.  Dalila Ical reports on this most recent and troubling incident.

Dalila Ical: By day the Gill Street neighborhood seems relatively quite. Today sanitation workers were cleaning the drains and residence went about their daily routines. By night however the calm is being shattered by the sound of gunshots. Only three days ago twenty eight year old Alva Moody and her three year old daughter Ethana Bennet was shot while they slept in their home. Young Ethana later succumbed. On Tuesday night a third resident in the neighborhood,36 year old Eric Tillett was shot. Love News understands that shortly after 8 o’clock ,Tillet and his girlfriend had arrived home on a motorcycle. Their house is located only a few hundred yards away from where Moody and here child lived. They were making their way into their home when a single gunshot was heard, Tillet soon realized he had been hit once in his right foot, we were told that the bullet went right through his foot breaking a bone. He was then taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for treatment and is listed in stable condition. Today perhaps in response to the increasing shootings in the neighborhood the Police department has shifted the Police booth up Gill Street. from its former location. Today a Police officer and two Belize Defense Force soldiers lay watch over the area at the very entrance to Tillets residence. Dalila Ical Love News.

A theory is that the shooter waited for the right opportunity while taking cover in an empty lot located near Tillett’s house. The victim does not know why he has been targeted.
