Secondary School Teachers Train for New Academic Year

While students enjoy the final days of the summer break, secondary school teachers across Belize are preparing for the new academic year.  From August 10 to 14, teachers from all six districts participated in professional development sessions hosted by the Ministry of Education’s Curriculum and Assessment Unit and Pathlight Belize.  The workshops, titled “Teaching with Purpose: From Framework to Practice,” focused on turning Belize’s National Curriculum Framework into practical classroom strategies.  Teachers explored lesson planning, competency-based assessments and student-centred approaches built around the curriculum’s core competencies, values and learning outcomes.  Pathlight Belize Programme Officer Naidra Mahmud says effective training gives teachers practical tools, confidence and opportunities to learn from their colleagues.

The sessions form part of the Ministry’s continued implementation of Belize’s competency-based curriculum. Organizers say the goal is to ensure teachers return to their classrooms better prepared to deliver purposeful and engaging lessons./
