Security Guard Charged with Wounding Minor

A Mahogany Heights security guard is charged with wounding a minor with a curtain rod and punching her in her face. 28-year-old, Chaves Garbutt, appeared unrepresented this morning before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola where he was read a single charge of wounding. This morning, a 15-year-old girl reported to police that she was in her room when Garbutt, who was babysitting her and her 6-year-old sister, demanded her to clean her room. According to the minor, he pulled a wire from her laptop and when she asked him for it, he pointed it at her face. The minor says she pushed the wire away and Garbutt threw the wire onto the bed and took out a metal curtain rod and hit her on her right upper arm, face, and hip area. Garbutt then proceeded to punch her and slap her on her face. The minor continued to say that after Garbutt stopped hitting her, he left the house and called her mother. When the mother got home, she went with the minor to make the report at the police station. In Court, Garbutt pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of $1,000 plus one surety of the same amount. The next court date for the matter is set for March 27.
