Seeking Savings via Renewable Energy Sources and OLADE

There is currently an undertaking by the Government of Belize through the Ministry of Public Service to develop a national information system that would aid in gathering data on energy usage in the country.  There is the aim by the government to formulate a strategy that would reduce the country’s dependence on imported refined fossil fuels and expand the country’s renewable sources of energy.  OLADE (OH-LAW-DY) is the acronym for the Latin American Energy Organization for which Belize is a member nation.  Representatives from OLADE are in Belize conducting training workshops for stakeholders in both the public and private sector in the use of the current prototype version of the Belizean Energy Information System.  Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Energy, Dr Peter Allen spoke on the four-day workshop.

DR PETER ALLEN

Belize’s energy sector has conducted several studies over the years prior to getting to this point where we are moving toward a more strategic and efficient way of utilizing energy.

DR PETER ALLEN

Dr Allen noted that Belize is doing extremely well in terms of attaining more than fifty percent of its electrical grid coming from renewable energy source particularly from the hydro and biomass for ASR/BSI.  This, Dr Allen says, can be taken even higher, which is where the national database comes into play.

The workshop begins today and runs up to March 31 at the Belize Biltmore Plaza Hotel in Belize City.
