Senator Cal Attends British Parliament Session on National Security

Senator Bevinton Cal attended British parliament session in Speaker’s Private Gallery in the United Kingdom. The senator attended the commonwealth conference on Parliamentary Scrutiny and oversight on National Security. Cal listened to the responses and discussion of the British Prime Minister is Rushi Sunak, in front of the parliament, and learned about the general policy of the government. Cal spoke to Love News about the pressing issues that the Prime Minister was asked.

Bevington Cal, Member of Senate: “It has to come with accountability and the live issues that are happening in the country. You know some topics that they questioned the Prime Minister on was again the opposition questioned the Prime Minister on his position on the Palestinian issue that we’re having right now, health issues, the health crisis that they are facing, the high cost of energy and poverty. So those are some of the questions that they pressed on. Again these are hearings that are done often for them to really get live updated answers from the Prime Minister and I think that is part of accountability and you know that will be good Belize in the future can adopt so that we get some sort of accountability when it comes to questioning our leaders on the live issues that we have on hand instead of waiting for months or for another House meeting or a press briefing for us to ask these questions. These are done often and so that the nation can be abreast of what the stance of the government is or what the Prime Minister is to the live issues that are happening.”

Cal stressed the importance of questioning our leaders on pressing matters instead of waiting days or months to get answers. He spoke to us about what he plans to bring back to Belize from the information that he received from the conference.

Bevington Cal, Member of Senate: “Well you know we’ve been learning a lot and a lot when it comes to climate change and national security issues that we face, understanding the common challenges that other Commonwealth nations are facing you know just that we’re in Belize. So it’s a lot to learn. And of course information that we’re receiving we want to bring back and hopefully adopt some in Belize and let these types of sessions, conferences, really impact how we govern in Belize.”

The senator expressed his appreciation and pride in attending this parliamentary session.
