Reports reaching our newsroom are that the Elections and Boundaries Commission is looking to appoint, PUP Senator Collet Montejo as field supervisor for the redistricting process. The United Democratic Party had written to the Chief Election Officer to express the party’s total objection to this proposal. This letter came as a result of the Chief Elections Officer to the members of the commission to inform them that Montejo would be assisting the redistricting task force. The UDP maintains the stance that the task force should be non-political. Leader of the Opposition, Moses “Shyne” Barrow, explains that this appointment would cause great concern.
Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition: “The Elections and Boundaries should be an apolitical body as per the constitution that transcends any government and is really just working to serve the best interest of our democracy. So I don’t know much about Mr.Montejo other than he is a political fanatic and so it is of great concern if he were to lead that exercise. We really should have people of high integrity, upstanding citizens and they do exist you don’t know how people vote when they go into the voting booth but there are people that may vote for either party but they put their country first and so I am not confident that he fits that criteria.”
Love News confirmed this evening that Montejo is not a member of the task force. We were told that a thorough process will be followed. Love News was also informed that the UDP Vice-Chair, Alberto August is a member of the Commission and so, the UDP’s claim to any conflict of interest or appearance is hypocritical.
