Senator says BEL dropped the ball on solar energy
The issue at the Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) regarding their energy sources, came up in the Senate meeting today. Private sector Senator, Kevin Herrera, spoke on the issue saying that BEL dropped the ball when they failed to explore solar energy and other sources.
Kevin Herrera, Senator for Business Community: “I think we were all shocked on June 21st of this year, Madam President, when BEL announced that Mexico was having issues with supply and may actually cut Belize and that would have resulted in blackouts and that would have affected the country. I raise the issue, Madam President, because I think that we can do something about it. I don’t have a quarrel with BEL about this situation because first and foremost, BEL is supposed to be a transmission and distribution company. The issue is more with respect to our policies and our regulators who over the past decade have not done more to avert this situation. Madam President, when we take the Mexican supply out of the equation, which should be around 55 megawatts, currently there are not a whole lot of options available. In fact, none that I know of apart from domestic supply who supplies the bare equivalent of demand. Had the rains not come in early July there could have been a major crisis that would have had dire consequences on businesses and households.”
