Senator Smith reiterates position that there should be a wholesale examination of the Constitution

In speaking with Senator Elena Smith, Love News also asked her today about the process of examining the Constitution. As we told you, former Belmopan Mayor Anthony Chanona is expected to chair the Commission, which will spearhead the national consultation process on the nation’s laws. Senator Smith reiterated that the Constitution should be looked at as a whole and not in parts and should include people from all walks of life.

Senator Elena Smith, President, Belize National Teachers Union: “As we had previously said, we don’t believe that the Constitution should be reviewed in bits and pieces. It should be an entire revision and so we look forward to that entire revision of the Constitution but we also want to make sure that those areas that we believe need serious changes that those changes do occur and for those areas that we believe maybe might just need tweaking, that that can be done as well. It has been quite a while that we have not done a revision and so this process has to be a whole process where everybody, every group, every entity can provide their feedback and their suggestions for changes to the Constitution.”
