Senator Smith resigns from the Senate

She has been a firebrand Senator for the past seven years, but in a few weeks, career unionist Elena Smith will no longer be a member of the Senate. Smith tendered her letter of resignation to the National Assembly last month, and is scheduled to officially vacate her post on April 1. In light of this, the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) will be holding an election to select her replacement. The umbrella union says two nominees have been chosen and will be vying for the post on Saturday at the Belmopan Civic Center. NTUCB’s President, Luis Martinez, spoke about the extra-ordinary meeting and democratic process that will be used to pursue their succession plan.

Our newsroom reached out to Senator Smith who indicated that her decision came after much careful consideration.  In the end, Smith is leaving, and will be placing focus on her family, and her passion for education.  Smith served as the President of the Belize National Teachers Union for several years and resigned in 2022.
