A similar motion was debated on Wednesday. Some Senators raised concerns with respect to the amendments to the Financial Orders Regulations of 2017. The amendments are similar to those made to the Stores Orders Regulations. In this case, the ceilings under which Government accounting officers may make verbal and written contracts are increased. For instance, a government accounting officer now has the authority to make a verbal contract of up to ten thousand dollars. That same accounting officer now has the authority to make written contracts with approval of the Minister of up to fifty thousand dollars, an increase from twenty thousand dollars. Again, Senator for Government Business, Godwin Hulse explained that the amendments are necessary due to changing times while concerns were raised by PUP Senator Valerie Woods and Private Sector Senator Mark Lizarraga.
The last time the ceilings were adjusted was in 1992.
