52-year-old, Benito Moreno is in a critical condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City after he was knocked off his bicycle by a motorist in Orange Walk Town. 18-year-old, Albert Vargas has been charged with four traffic offences in connection with this incident. Assistant Superintendent of Police, Selvin Tillett, who commands the Orange Walk Police Formation, told us more.
“Initial investigations revealed that on the 7th of December at about 10:45am Moreno was riding a bicycle on the Belize Corozal Road when he was knocked down by a male person on a scooter. The person fled the scene. Police investigation started and as a result of the investigation police detained and charged one Alberto Vargas, 18 years old of Orange Walk Town, for failure to stop and render aid, failure to report an accident, driving a motor vehicle without being the holder of a valid driver’s license and driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention.”
“Do investigators believe that the young man was speeding?”
“At this moment the investigation is still not complete as yet so we do not want to divulge any information at this point.”
“Is there any reason to believe the victim was drunk?”
“Well I wouldn’t say at this point; we would need to take a blood sample for testing before we can decide on that. Both victim and driver, usually, in a traffic accident we’d take a blood or urine sample to test.”
