DNA results are out on two human legs that were found back in 2018 in the Cayo District. The results indicate that the limbs were that of 17-year-old, Gerardo Vasquez who went missing on September 25, 2018. The results reportedly came out some weeks ago but today, Gerardo’s mother, Martha granted us an interview on the case.
Martha Vasquez, Mother of Deceased: “They didn’t say anything. They only said that they would leave the case open like they will continue to see what they could find but I don’t know where they will find. In my mind we didn’t want to believe it was him but me and my husband we went and he just told me that we have to be strong because it is true the legs are his. After two years, I can’t. I can’t tell you. To tell you the truth I don’t think he is still alive without the two legs he could probably live but only with help, without help he can’t live. Supposed they cut the legs and they can’t find the body? Supposed then they cut it and took the body to another place and the legs only to leave some clues? So we live in an area that has a lot of bush, the river is on the other side of the road, we have bush on this area at the back, the other side and the other side. So they only crossed the fence and they could find the bush with the body. I want justice for him so that we could try to do the best – we can’t search for him anywhere because we don’t have any clues. We didn’t find the bicycle either – well leading up to it yes we did find some bicycle that looked like that but you know they could have changed the tire, they could have changed some parts.”
Gerardo had left home to an unknown destination and was not seen nor heard from since. Seven days after his disappearance, the severed legs were found floating in the Belize River near the village of Ontario, Cayo District where he lived. Vasquez was a homosexual and it is believed that his death may have been a hate crime as he was reportedly being bullied in his village.
