Sherwin Leslie’s family is outraged

This morning the Belize Police Department identified Sunday night’s traffic victim as Sherwin Leslie, a Belize City resident of Flamboyant Street. Leslie was killed around seven o’clock while he was riding a bicycle near mile 24 on the Phillip Goldson Highway. The man that hit Leslie, Edwin Hill, the Prime Minister’s driver, is yet to be criminally charged and that has angered the victim’s family. Reporter Vejea Alvarez tells us more.

Vejea Alvarez, Love FM News: Tonight, the family of 63-year-old Sherwin Leslie is outraged over statements made by the Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams. On Monday, when asked who may have been at fault, Williams told the media that preliminary investigations revealed that Leslie swerved in front of Edwin Hill’s GMC SUV while he was riding a bicycle near mile 24 on the Philip Goldson Highway.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police, B.P.D: “Based on what investigations is showing so far is that the cyclist s the one who swerved in the path of Mr. Hill’s oncoming vehicle. But we’re not going to say, at this time, who is at fault. We’ll put the file together and then we’re going to send it to the D.P.P. and then she will make that determination.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love FM News:  While Williams never faulted anyone and stated that Hill’s charges will be determined by the DPP, the victim’s younger brother, Sherman Leslie, says that the Compol should have at least waited to make such a pronouncement.

Sherman Leslie, Brother of Deceased: “The thing that bugged me out most of all is like the Commissioner of Police has already made his decision that my brother is at fault. If I knock down anybody in this vehicle that I drive I will get charged for due care and attention. He already is saying that my brother is at fault so, such is life mien. You have to take it how it comes. The D.P.P. might make a next decision but Chester has already made the decision and that is how I see it. I’ve never met the guy before. I don’t know him. Thanks for the decision Chester.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love FM News: Do you think your brother would have done something like that? Swerved in front of a moving vehicle?

Sherman Leslie, Brother of Deceased: “I don’t think so. I don’t think so. My brother doesn’t. The thing about it is that my brother would come home from 4, 5, 6 every day. Why would he be riding his bike? He doesn’t even like bicycles at night time. He doesn’t go to the front to go and buy on bikes. He goes walking much less to go and ride bicycles at night.

Vejea Alvarez, Love FM News:   Up until last night, Leslie had no idea it was his brother that was killed in the incident. He says he found out from a neighbour who recognized the senior citizen’s bicycle and tennis shoe.

Sherman Leslie, Brother of Deceased: “Basically, I got to understand it from one of our neighbours who works at the hospital and recognised the bicycle and the clothes that he had on and she called my friend. We call each other brother and sister and she said “Breds did you see the news?” and I told her which news? And she said that that looked like Sherwin’s bicycle and that’s how I ended up finding out and I made a couple calls and that’s how I ended up finding out that it was him last night after the news last night, minute to ten.

Vejea Alvarez, Love FM News:  Leslie described his brother as a hardworking man who according to him may have been employed to be the watchman for a home in Biscayne Village

Sherman Leslie, Brother of Deceased: “My brother, he’s a worker. He’s basically like a little runman. He goes and washes cars. He goes out to tourist village in that area there and he washes cars right out there. Check?

Vejea Alvarez, Love FM News: He was a hardworking man?

Sherman Leslie, Brother of Deceased: “Yeah. He took care of himself by washing the vehicles. He messed up in life but he didn’t kill anybody. That’s the important part in life.

Vejea Alvarez, Love FM News: From what you understand, what was your brother doing in that area? Because I understand that he wasn’t from there?

Sherman Leslie, Brother of Deceased: “No. We got to understand that he was watching some house but then how come he never ever told us that he was watching a house on the highway? Right? We don’t know about any house that he was watching. So that is what is beating me right now because if anybody had seen my brother going up the highway and called me and told me, bwai Sherman I saw your brother up the highway, definitely I was going to go look for my brother because he’s going the wrong route. That’s what I would have thought.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love FM News:  Come August, Leslie would have been celebrating his 64th birthday with his family. Unfortunately now, they only have memories of him and their mother who passed away in August last year. All in all, his brother says he isn’t mad with Hill but is hoping that he can step forward and assist the family during this difficult time.

Sherman Leslie, Brother of Deceased: “I just want somebody to come and, the person who knocked down my brother to come and help bury my brother. I’m not upset with him or anything. I am a driver just like he is.”
