Shirley Roberts-Young Foundation Awards Scholarships to High School Students
Over the weekend ten high school students from across Belize received support for their education through scholarships provided by the Shirley Roberts-Young Foundation. The foundation held its second annual disbursement of scholarships at the Belize City House of Culture on Saturday. Kirk Gillett, a member of the foundation and the nephew of the late Shirley Robers-Young, explained that the foundation supports the students’ education by covering more than just tuition and school fees.
The ten scholarship recipients over the weekend join the 26 recipients from last year at the organization’s first disbursement. Love News spoke with some of the recipients from each cohort to find out how the scholarships have impacted their lives.
Love News also spoke with the foundation’s founder Julie Roberts, who explained that some of the girls who received scholarships are the first among their families to ever go to high school. She said that these girls represent the change through education that the foundation is striving to achieve.
