Shooting on Johnson Street leaves man injured

Thirty year old Mathew Smith was injured when he was shot on Tuesday night on Johnson Street in Belize City. ASP Alejandro Cowo explained what happened.

ASP Alejandro Cowo: “He was observed suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the right side of his shoulder. What he had indicated to the police is that he was at the Fibbers Restaurant located on Cemetery Rd. purchasing some food when he observed two male persons coming from Johnson St. towards Cemetery Rd. and one of them whilst approaching the junction on Cemetery Rd. and Johnson St. one of them pulled out a firearm and point it at his direction and fired several shots at him. Corporal Keith Cruz who was also at the Fibbers restaurant purchasing food saw what was happening and pulled out his licensed firearm and fired two shots at the male person who then ran away from the scene. There is nothing to indicate that Mr. Smith is a member of any gang in the city. We know that he is a laborer. He sometimes work with City Council and sometimes he does other kind of work but he is not engaged in any that we know so far in any gang activity.”

According to the police, Smith was the intended target; however the motive of the shooting is unknown. He has since been released from the hospital.
