The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) have completed their recruitment of temporary staff phase for the 2020 Population and Housing Census. The census is conducted every ten years with the main objective to count the resident population of Belize. The data gathered is then compiled in one database which is then presented. According to the Deputy Director-General, Diana Castillo-Trejo the institute is aiming to improve the use of digital technology and geospatial innovations. This will be possible through the use of tablets and geographical maps while collecting data.
Diana Castillo- Trejo, Deputy Director General. Statistical Institute of Belize: “With respect to our IT infrastructure like I said the entire census process is built upon an integrated IT system so as data is collected that information is going to feed into the system which will feed into payroll, because we pay according to progress, according to households completed so once questionnaires are completed that information feeds into everything from payroll, from mapping as mapping is being updated, as households are being enumerated our maps are being updated in real time as well. It feeds into our quality controls so we are monitoring certain quality indicators in real time so from day to day or hour to hour we can see if there is any area where we think maybe there are data issues that we want to send the field staff back out to deal with it because the indicators are not looking quite right. So all of that just feeds into each other and feeds into the integrated IT system and all of our IT applications were built in house. Census is going to start on May 12th but everything this year is preparation leading up to that. We’re in the final stages of that, we’re procuring now our final amount of equipment and supplies and we’ll be opening regional census offices by early April of this year. So everything is about census this year and so you can look out for us and look out for regular updates from us as to the progress of the census, as to our preparations, and we are aiming for or we have challenged ourselves to have our first set of preliminary data and our first preliminary report on the end of this year and that is a first ever for the SIB, even for the CSO before, us to have data to be published by the end of the census year.”
The SIB officially launched the 2020 Population and Housing Census on October 31, 2018.
