Another set of persons under quarantine have escaped. This time, six Guatemalans who illegally crossed into Belize somehow managed to evade the Belize Defence Force soldiers at Victor Galvez Stadium in San Ignacio Town, Cayo District. According to Police Commissioner Chester Williams, the constant escape by those under quarantine poses a huge threat to the safety of other Belizeans. The police department and the BDF are currently doing their respective investigation into the matter.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “I have tasked Mr.Myvette to put together an investigative team to launch a criminal investigation into that matter and the reason being that upon inspection of the area from where these persons escaped there were padlocks on a shutter and obviously there was no breakage, the padlocks were not damaged. From what it appears at this time keys were used to open those padlocks to facilitate the escape and so we’ll be looking at that and if it is that we find that anyone aided or facilitated their escape then those persons will be charged criminally. Simultaneously BDF is also conducting their own investigation as you would know it is the BDF who man these quarantine centers and so they’re looking at their own internal mechanism to see if there was some negligence on the part of those officers who were working at that particular moment and once there is then I’m sure that they will also bring internal charges against the officers concerned. From what I have been briefed there is only one person who had keys to the locks that were on the shutter and so our investigator will have be centered around that person who will have to explain how it is these individuals were able to escape without having to break any locks to get out of the facility.”

ComPol Williams also stated that the Minister of National Security, Michael Peyrifitte, met with the police department this afternoon to discuss the way forward to ensure that those in quarantine do not escape.
