Skeletal Remains with Gunshot Wounds Found Near Belize-Guatemala Border

Police further out west are investigating the murder of a man whose body was found yesterday morning near Belize’s border with Guatemala. Around 8 o’clock, police visited an area near the borderline in the Cayo District, where they discovered skeletal remains in a bushy area. Police say the man’s skull had gunshot wounds, and in the area, they found a single gunshot slug and a cell phone. Today, the remains were identified as 25-year-old Roberto Carlos Gonzalez Carrera, a Belmopan resident, who went missing months ago. His family says Carrera left home in January of this year to visit his mother in Guatemala but never returned. His sister-in-law, Blanco Samayoa, spoke to Love News today and says the discovery of Carrera’s body will hopefully provide some form of closure.

Blanco Samoya, Sister-in-Law: “Yesterday, well last night actually, we received the news when we saw the pictures of other family members that they posted. So we were wondering what happened. So we found out that they found his remains. Well, you know, we are sad because we from the longest we don’t see him and to find out this news is very sad because my mother-in-law and the rest of the family we had posted that he went missing. So now with that information, now we are very sad and right now my mother-in-law, she’s over there with his mom.”

Reporter: Over there where ma’am ? Guatemala ?

Blanco Samoya, Sister-in-Law:  “Benque. Yeah, they’re at Benque you know the rest of the family and now right now they’re just supporting his mom through these hard times and well, probably tonight we will know more information about what happened and I didn’t see him a lot or you know have much time with him but he was very young, a good boy and he was going to school and so we just stopped seeing him because they went to live across the border in Melchor but only you know 0now and then when he does come with his mom and so forth. But it’s very sad because he was very young. Very young tragic news and you know the family right now is you know going through these hard times and well hopefully we get some closure as to what happened.”

Carrera was a naturalized Belizean.
