Social Media Exaggeration ? Only One Immigration Officer Detained, Another Sought by Police

The story of six immigration officers detained by Police seemed to have been an exaggeration posted on social media this afternoon.  Love News was made to understand by several officials that only one woman immigration officer was detained by the Police in Ladyville, and that another woman officer is being sought as she is currently on leave.  Up to news time tonight, there are no official charges levied against the officer in custody, therefore we cannot publish their names just yet.  What we can tell you is that one of the women found herself in some hot water a few months ago after photos and videos of her went viral on the internet. The detention comes after a Jamaican national had reportedly paid monies after he was refused to land in Belize.  Prime Minister John Briceno, the substantive Minister of Immigration has been busy with the budget debate but he was briefed on the situation.

Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “I have not gotten the full details and I’m not sure if six have been detained I don’t even know the number, I know I think two of them for sure but basically what has happened as we all know the Jamaican national has made an accusation and the police have reviewed the tape and they believe that they have enough information or evidence to be able to do a full fledged investigation. As I mentioned to the CEO we should not get involved. These people, if that is happening, need to be held accountable and if this kind of action is taking place within the ministry or within the department it needs to stop, it needs to end, it needs to end now and we need to find a way to get rid of all of those people that behave in such manner. I’m told that the Jamaican was – and I can’t go into too much details but basically passed over monies and then when he tried to leave the country he was told he can’t leave the country and so then he got upset and made this report. But I want to again repeat as I said earlier in a previous interview when I was asked I believe that this kind of behavior is unacceptable of any member of this government and especially in this case in the immigration department, a ministry that I am responsible for. We need to get rid of that kind of behavior and we will not get involved I don’t care who these people are and they need to answer and if they are guilty then they have to face the music.”

The arrest was made today at the Philip Goldson International Airport.  Love News was informed that senior officials are looking into a possible ring within the Immigration Department where officers are hustling foreigners who have stringent requirements to enter the country.  Our newsroom further understands that Police are looking to interrogate all the officers who were on shift at the time of the incident.  We also understand that the department has launched an internal investigation.  We are following this story.
