Social Security Board Grants $500K for Repairing Supreme Court Building in Belize

The Social Security Board has provided five hundred thousand dollars to the government to aid in repairing the Supreme Court (high court) building. Last year, the structure suffered severe infrastructural damage during Hurricane Lisa and was forced to be closed down. Since then, the court has been under repair, and court proceedings have been taking place at the Treasury Department on Coney Drive. Financial Secretary Joseph Waight explained that the government recognized the urgent need to repair the building and saw it fit to seek funding from the SSB through its disaster relief fund.

SSB CEO, Deborah Ruiz, explained that the SSB’s disaster relief fund accumulates over time. She says that despite contributors being concerned that the SSB is providing funds to the government for a government project, it was within SSB’s legal purvey to provide GOB with the funds.
