Big changes are on the horizon for the governance of softball and baseball in Belize as the respective federations for these sports have come together. Following a series of consultations ending in a resolution at a General Assembly this past Saturday, April 26, the constitution of the Belize Softball Federation has been amended. Pending final ratification of the new constitution after a legal review, the organization will officially be renamed the Belize Baseball and Softball Federation. The draft constitution, which was reviewed and received minor edits during Saturday’s meeting, also introduces stricter measures for accountability and updates eligibility criteria for players, teams, and associations. Guidelines for national team selection and national tournaments have also been modernized. In addition to the constitutional review, the assembly also approved dates for upcoming national tournaments, including male and female softball, co-ed softball, Little League baseball, men’s baseball, and over-50 softball competitions. The final draft constitution is now undergoing legal review before it returns to the General Assembly for final ratification, paving the way for a new era for both baseball and softball in Belize. Marconi Leal Jr., President of the Belize Baseball Softball Federation, said that the amendments were necessary because the constitution was almost thirty years old.
In addition to the constitutional review, the assembly also approved dates for upcoming national tournaments, including male and female softball, co-ed softball, Little League baseball, men’s baseball, and over-50 softball competitions.
