And in dealing with crime, the Belize Police Department is facing challenges as it relates to resources, specifically transportation. Recently police officers in Hopkins Village were without a police vehicle until one was donated. Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa explains that difficulties in sourcing vehicles are being experienced by countries around the world.
Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs: “We’re having a difficulty and it’s not just Belize it’s all over the world in terms of sourcing vehicles. You may recall that last year December the police had issued a bid to Ford to supply some twenty four motor vehicles but there has been an issue with sourcing of parts and getting the manufacturers to deliver the vehicles on time. That was to have been delivered within a sixty day period however we’ve been getting them recently I think we got six in September and we’re supposed to be getting another six this month as well. So it is so in coming. There is a shortage but we are trying to get those twenty four vehicles in. We do have to look at our resources and allocate them as on a need be basis and so as we get the vehicles in we certainly send them out to the most needed locations in the country.”
