Southern Belize Prepares for Tropical Storm Sara’s Impact

Authorities in southern Belize are working to prepare communities for the impact of the incoming Tropical Storm Sara. In the Toledo District, the National Emergency Management Organization NEMO held a briefing in Punta Gorda this morning. NEMO has called on community leaders to keep an open line of communication. District Coordinator Kenton Parham says that residents are encouraged to activate their family emergency plans and begin preparing to deal with potential flooding.

Love News spoke with various village councils in the Stann Creek District to find out about preparations being made in their communities. Placencia Village Chairman Warren Garbutt says that the peninsula is largely spared from serious flooding, but evacuation provisions are being made just in case. In Georgetown, Chairman Daniel Arzu, says his council is in emergency mode and is working closely with NEMO.

Cultural events that have been planned for the weekend are being canceled due to the incoming storm.
