Southern Resident Band Together to Save the Silk Cayes

Belize like many small islands developing states continues to be impacted by the effects of climate change. One of those most visible and damaging effects is erosion. Several coastal communities and islands are being impacted by rising sea levels and beach erosion. This is what is happening at Silk Cayes which is part of the Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve. The cayes which are located off the coast of Placencia are shrinking due to erosion and rising sea waters. Placencia Village residents have grown concerned and over the weekend, they began building a sea wall but were stopped by law enforcement offices for acting against the Fisheries Act. Hipolito Novelo reports.

Silk Cayes is one of many locations in the country that is being impacted by rising sea levels and beach erosion which has been n Monkey River, Dangriga and Barranco. Dr Colin Young, the Executive Director of the Caribbean Climate Change Centre (5 C’s) told Love News that the severity of the effects of climate change is increasing.
