Speaker of the House, Valerie Woods has announced her plan to have the standing orders of the House of Representatives be revised and amended to align with the modern times. The announcement came this morning at the start of the House Meeting in Belmopan.
Valerie Woods, House Speaker: “I have been entrusted by you honorable members to preside over meetings and my intention is to continue doing so fairly and fearlessly, transparently but always in accordance with the rule book. A rule book which dates to 1966 and has not undergone a comprehensive review both to have it reflect modern times as well as practical applications with a House that has significantly increased in numbers since 1966. As essentially the referee of these house proceedings it is my fervent hope that we will work together on improving these standing orders for the benefit of all members but ultimately for the benefit of the people of Belize for whom and by whom you have been given the opportunity to represent. The working group on this exercise to develop a proposed draft revised standing orders are the members of the Constitution and Foreign Affairs Committee. I thank the members of Cayo South, of Orange Walk South, of Freetown, of Dangriga, Of Mesopotamia and Collet in agreeing to work with me to undertake the activity.”
