Speaking up against injustices in the BDF

BLACK LIVES

Black Lives Matter – it is a social media hashtag that has taken flight across borders and oceans.  In the United States there is currently a social war primarily against racism.  The international news has been bombarded with stories of riots and protests in several states. The protestors have been demanding that more be done to combat the systematic racism that plagues society. While the fight is valid and one whose time has come, there are social issues in Belize that force its citizens to be silent for fear of victimization or that get swept under the rug in the absence of a notable uprising.  One such social ill is the many injustices done within the Belize Defence Force.  On multiple occasions we have heard of sexual misconduct, cases of theft, bullying and bribery.  We have, however, rarely heard of justice being carried out.  Speaking on this issue was Attorney Lisa Shoman who is known for her poignant views and opinions on social media.

Several petitions are making their rounds on social media calling for transparency in the BDF as it relates to sexual assault and rape.
