A man who rented a vehicle for three days says he was intercepted by police on Princess Margaret Drive and ended up a victim on the Hummingbird Highway. On Saturday, Jacinto Luna, a special constable attached to the Belize City Council alleged that he was stopped by men in police uniform who bound and kidnapped him and sped off with the rental vehicle he had in his possession on Friday night. It appears there was some discrepancy in his report and the Criminal Investigation Branch had to re-interview him due to some issues in his story.
A.S.P. Alejandro Cowo – Head CIB: “Sometime after midday, Mr. Jacinto Luna 31 years Special Constable for City Council visited the Precinct 3 Police Station and reported that on that same date at about three in the morning he was driving a rented vehicle along the Princess Margaret Drive when he was stopped by a vehicle. Two male persons alighted the vehicle, these two persons were dressed in camouflage clothing and as a result, both of them pointed a firearm at him and demanded to conduct a search on the vehicle. He mentioned that he thought it was the police so he obeyed and after they conducted the search on the vehicle they asked him to get inside of the vehicle. Thereafter the two male persons jumped in the vehicle and drove away with the vehicle. He further mentioned that he was tied up and did not see where the persons drove off to. They drove for a long time and when he realized the vehicle came to a stop he was put out of the vehicle. Thereafter, he managed to untie himself and walk to the highway where he observed that he was on the Hummingbird Highway. He hitchhiked and made a stop at the Belmopan Police Station to make a report. It is something that we are following, we have spoken to Belmopan Police and indeed they mentioned that he was there making a report on Saturday morning so that is something that we have confirmed with him. We also know that he rented the vehicle on Wednesday of last week so that is another part that we have confirmed with that vehicle.”
Jose Sanchez:” When was he supposed to return the rental? What type of vehicle was it?”
A.S.P. Alejandro Cowo – Head CIB: “I believe he rented a vehicle the vehicle for three days and it is a Toyota Ford Runner. Up to now, we don’t have any suspects and that he cannot identify the two persons who held him up. The vehicle has not been located at this moment, there are certain things that we need to clear and that is why he was called in to be re interviewed because there are more details that we need to get as to what transpired on that day.”
Reporter: “Are there any inconsistencies that you all are looking at, at this point?”
A.S.P. Alejandro Cowo – Head CIB: “Yes, that is why he was called in again to be re interviewed.”
The rental vehicle has not been found.
