Special Envoy Condemns Community’s Attitude Towards Gender Based Violence

Turning now to other news: cases of domestic abuse and violence against women and children have been on the rise within the past weeks. These heinous acts have led to fatalities in some instances. In speaking on the critical issue, Special Envoy for Families and Children, Rossana Briceno says that society has started to view violence against women as a norm, which can only be eliminated through education.

H.E. Rossanna Briceño, Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children: “It should not be a norm that a woman, a child, young people are dying. They’re being abused. They’re being exploited. It’s not normal. This is, where are we going, you know, as a country? So yes, a lot more than conversations have to happen now and I am working very closely with the Ministry of Human Development, with the Ministry of Health. I met with the representative from UNICEF this morning and we’re all trying to put our heads together to see: What can we do? What kind of programs? What kind of reaction now? It’s a reaction that needs to be put in place.”

Briceno added that another important step is reaching out to and educating men so they can be included in the country’s attitude shift regarding gender-based violence and domestic abuse.
