Special Envoy Defends Guatemala Visit Amid Public Debate

After the debate on social media, the name calling and the Belize/Guatemala back and forth, the Office of the Special Envoy has issued a statement.  In a release sent out today, the office asserted that Belize can stand firm on matters of national importance while continuing dialogue with its neighbours. The statement refers to Rossana Briceño’s recent participation in the Interregional Meeting of First Ladies and First Gentlemen in Antigua, Guatemala.  She stated that she attended the scheduled meeting in her official capacity as Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children and as the spouse of Belize’s Prime Minister. It was a meeting that brought together regional representatives to discuss leadership, social cohesion, democratic values and issues affecting families and communities.  According to her office, the participation ensured that Belize had a voice in those discussions. It also pointed to Belize’s longstanding involvement in regional and international forums as part of its commitment to cooperation and diplomacy.  The statement maintains that engaging with neighbouring countries can take place while protecting Belize’s national interests. It adds that, particularly during challenging times, Belize must continue to take its place at regional and international tables.
