Speculations Arise in Fatal Shooting; Drug Nexus Suspected

Sticking to the narcos situation up north, while investigators are yet to confirm whether the killing of 28-year-old Benito Canelo was drug related, the speculations are such.  Canelo was killed last night just before nine o’clock in the presence of his wife, 27-year-old Indy Sesemi Ruiz.  The couple was sitting in a park in Patchakan Village in the Corozal District when the gunman approached and fired as many as ten shots targeted at Canelo.  Police blotter indicates that the shooter showed up at the park in a white Ford F150 truck, walked into the park, fired the shots and left in the truck.  Our Corozal Correspondent, Rafael Dominguez Junior, spoke with an emotional Ruiz who is now traumatized at witnessing the death of her husband.

Indy Ruiz, Wife of Deceased: “Well we were going to the park and he said to me “Come on.” He said to me “I’m going to call my daughter.” because it was his daughter’s birthday. Then we went to the park to sit down. In the park he called his daughter but his daughter didn’t answer him. I told him “Maybe she is still in church.” then he gave me his phone and told me to take care of it. Remember that I lost everything, he even gave me the key to the motorcycle and when we were talking there he hugged me and told me that the day he leaves I’m going to miss him. Suddenly the neighbors came and he sat down and we were relaxing and laughing. Then my mom told me to come home because she felt bad and I went home. Then I came back like in five or ten minutes and I saw that he was with my other cousin and other people. We continued to hang out. Then we saw a man with a long sleeve shirt at a distance and he said ” Why is he dressed like this if it is really hot ?” The man had his head lowered and when he saw him raise his head it was because he was already near us. I didn’t see when he took the gun out but my sister saw when he pulled out a gun because she was on the side of the house. He pushed me to the floor. When I saw Benito he was already on the floor. I could no longer do anything. I just ran and the man kept shooting him. Thank God none of the bullets hit me. It seemed like he was the target. It all happened so quickly.”

While Minister of Home Affairs, Kareem Musa, indicated that there is no evidence to prove that Canelo’s murder was drug-related, the Leader of the Opposition told the media that he is certain that it was linked to the drug-trade.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs: “The preliminary information is that it’s not leading in that direction but as you rightly mentioned with the very tense situation that is taking place in Chetumal at the moment we cannot rule that as a motive as a possible connection and so the police is looking at that angle as well but so far that doesn’t seem to be the lead.”

Canelo was pronounced dead just past midnight at the Corozal Community Hospital.  Investigators found as many as ten nine-millimeter expended shells at the scene.
