Domestic violence is a closed door issue that many women face but do not speak of to their families. Sometimes the abuser never gets prosecuted because it would mean sending a parent to prison. It is one of the issues that the Commissioner of Police indicated he intends the department to pursue to a greater degree. The most recent case of domestic violence has landed a woman in the hospital. On Sunday Belize City resident Orlett Sanchez was stabbed just before six a.m. at her home on Guadalupe Street. ASP Alejandro Cowo told Love News that the culprit was her husband.
A.S.P. Alejandro Cowo – Head CIB: “Police visited number 28 Guadalupe St. where they observed Orlett Sanchez with an apparent stab wound to the right side of her chest. She mentioned that whilst she was inside of her house along with other family members, a dispute ensued between her and her common-law husband. As a result, she felt a stabbing injury to her chest and thereafter realized that she was bleeding. She was taken to the hospital where she is still in a stable condition at this moment. He has not been detained so far, police are still looking for him. She has been spoken to, interviewed and it is not the first time that they have been going through domestic disputes and she had also mentioned that she was in the process of actually filing for separation from the common-law husband.”
Jose Sanchez: “Is she willing to press charges?”
A.S.P. Alejandro Cowo – Head CIB: “Well, the police were only able to interview her for a short while because of the injury that she sustained; she cannot talk clearly at this moment. Once the police can secure a statement, definitely whosoever was involved will be charged.”
Because of the extent of her injuries, the police department does not know if Sanchez wants to pursue the issue. However, the hunt for the suspect, her husband, who the police did not identify, continues.
