One major concern that applicants of the unemployment relief program have is the delay in the approval for their applications. Many of them have stated that they applied at the start of the program but still have not received any approval texts. While this is not directly the responsibility of the Social Security Board (SSB), the General Manager, Chandra Nisbet Cansino, was on our Covid-19 Update Show, and addressed this concern. According to her, hardcopy applications will take more time than online ones.
Chandra Nisbet Cansino, General Manager, Social Security Board: “A lot of persons are now getting that approval text and of course we’re very happy for that but at the point that you get your approval text your claim is just reaching Social Security and then that process of formatting the banking information and then forwarding the funds to the bank and then the bank uploading the funds to your account then starts at the point that you receive that text. So for those who have the correct banking information you still need to wait twenty four to forty eight hours for your money to reach the point where you can deposit it because yes the COVID team has approved but then the payment process takes about twenty four hours for Social Security to make the transaction deposited but then the banks then have to deposit your money to your account and I think they sometimes they take six, twelve, twenty four hours I think it depends. If you’re using a credit union account it takes even an additional day because the credit union then has to receive your money from their bank and so those persons that use a credit union account your access to your funds will be maybe a half day or a day after person who submitted a bank account.”
This afternoon, Minister of Education, Patrick Faber, also spoke on our COVID-19 Update Show about the importance of getting food items and financial assistance out to the residents of Belize. He stated that the matter was discussed in this morning’s Cabinet meeting.
Hon. Patrick Faber, Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture: We discussed those updates in Cabinet this morning and there are still people applying. I think Dr.Barnett reported this morning that we’re now up to 73,000 applicants and that those applicants the number that are being served and approved are increasing on a daily basis. It was off to a slow start but I think we’re now way up in terms of the numbers of people who are benefiting from this and of course we continue to try to make those approvals everyday.”
