St. John’s Credit Union officially opened its new headquarters this morning on Buttonwood Bay Boulevard in Belize City, marking a major milestone in the institution’s long history and steady growth. The state-of-the-art building represents a multi-million-dollar investment and is especially significant for the credit union, which for years operated out of rented spaces while expanding its services and membership. Today’s inauguration symbolizes a new chapter of ownership, stability, and long-term vision for the institution. During the opening ceremony, President of St. John’s Credit Union, Alvan Haynes, reflected on the organization’s more than 80 years of existence, highlighting how far it has come since its humble beginnings. Haynes also shared updates on the credit union’s current membership and outlined new service enhancements.
Over the years, St. John’s Credit Union has expanded its footprint with branches in Belmopan, Dangriga, and two locations in Belize City. With today’s opening, the credit union now owns all the buildings that house its headquarters and branch offices, further strengthening its financial foundation. Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner was also in attendance and praised the inauguration of the new headquarters, noting that the continued growth of St. John’s Credit Union contributes to increased commerce, development, and economic progress within the city.

Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City: “You are looking at something Belize City understands well and it is belief made visible. Many of us grew up knowing what a credit union represented. It was where your parents went because someone listened. Where a small loan carried a big dream. Where people were treated as members not numbers. That experience really shaped our souls, businesses and futures across this city. I could recall long ago going to my high school the Anglican Cathedral College that we would always pass on the headquarters on Basra Street. So for nearly eighty years St.John’s Credit Union has been a part of that story. And this building really tells us that story is still unfolding. Belize City is a place where institutions either root themselves deeply or they don’t last. St.John’s Credit Union has lasted because it chose community. It chose consistency and it chose trust. Those same values are what build strong cities. As Mayor I see this investment as a sign of confidence in Belize City. Confidence in our people, confidence in our economy and in our direction.”
The new headquarters stands on the northside with its south side office on Basra Street still operational.
