Stann Creek JPs Receive Crucial Training Amid Increase in New Appointments

A training for justices of the peace was held over the weekend for the Stann Creek Chapter. President of the JP Association, Adrian Danny Madrid, told our Dangriga Correspondent, Harry Arzu, that the training has become necessary since there have been newly sworn in justices over recent months.

Adrian Danny Madrid, JP National President: “It is important, it’s a training that we do we try to do every year. And since we have been appointing new JPs since December, January, February, March, we believe that it’s time for us to do our training. And we try, in our training session, we try to bring the documents to the JPs that are used the most because JPs, as you know, have to sign and witness hundreds of documents. But we are here today to try to show the one that we believe are more important that JPs have to sign. There are certain documents that when you sign it, you must know that person more than five years and other documents the person must appear in front of you with a valid picture ID for you to sign those documents. And what we are doing today is trying to explain each type of document that they have to sign and explain to them how you sign it, how you should recognize it, how you should read it, but you should never ever fill out a form for nobody. We are not there to fill out  documents because that’s when you get yourself in problems. We are there to witness documents that people need for us, needs our signature.”

President Madrid also spoke on the role JPs can play when it comes to marriages.

Adrian Danny Madrid, JP National President: “There are two ways that we do marriage. The first phase is documents signed by a JP.”

Reporter: Justice ? A senior ?

Adrian Danny Madrid, JP National President: “No, just a JP. Justice of the Peace. He signs the first amount of documents which goes to the Treasury Department and that, when they’re taking that farm which had JP signs, which has to sign the certificate, a birth certificate or passport or if the person is divorced must sign that that’s a true copy of the divorce and then, after that they give them the minister’s license to marry. That’s when a senior JP takes over. When a senior JP takes over, he has to write a letter to the ministry. The Minister will answer giving the instructions how to do the wedding and then the JP meets with both persons who are getting married, have a meeting and agrees to conduct the wedding at a date, time and suitable place. And then yes, then we are allowed to do that. Senior JPs then, yeah, that’s right.”
