According to Dr Marvin Manzanero, the State of Emergency that will be invoked tomorrow is in an effort to contain the transmission of COVID-19. Many countries around the world have had major increases in cases after identifying their index case. This is the concern of many Belizeans who have been monitoring the spread in various countries like the US, Italy and other nations.  Love News spoke to Dr Manzanero on this aspect of the pandemic and Belize.

Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services: “There is the possibility of ongoing transmission yes I don’t know if it can – hopefully it is never the way it is growing in other countries. The fact that the population is small can be a factor but we’re not going to rely on that. You’re always going to try to contain one case that we identify from spreading to others, that’s always going to be a hallmark of a good public health measure is containment.”

Reporter: Is it a matter of since everybody will be staying home it’s less likely that they will be out spreading it ?

Dr.Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services: “That’s the intention, not only spreading it but less likelihood of people actually getting an infection.”

The State of Emergency will be for thirty days in the first instance.  It could be shortened or extended depending on how things progress.
