Sugar Price Increase Proposed Amidst Country-Wide Sugar Shortage

Sugar Price Increase Proposed Amidst Country-Wide Sugar Shortage

An increase in the price of sugar may be on the horizon. Today, Minister of Agriculture Jose Mai weighed in on the supposed country-wide sugar shortage and said he believes the solution is a price increase. In recent weeks, residents in the west and south have had difficulty finding sugar at their local stores. The problem, according to the Belize Sugar Industries, is a direct result of contraband sugar making its way to neighboring countries. The company has previously discussed the issue with GOB and proposed an increase that it believes will be 36 cents per week for a family of four. Minister Mai explained that he also believes there is a need for an uptick in the commodities’ price to stop the smuggling of Belizean sugar.

Mai added that adequate authorities are working to identify persons involved in the contraband of Belizean sugar.
