Supporters Defend 13th Amendment as Tool to Combat Gang Violence

While the majority at the consultation expressed strong opposition to the 13th Amendment, a small but vocal minority came out in support of the proposed constitutional changes. Those in favor argued that the average Belizean deserves to feel safe in their own community, especially in areas plagued by gang violence. They believe the amendment offers a proactive solution to a long-standing crime problem that has outpaced traditional policing methods. Supporters say the creation of “special areas” and a dedicated Gun and Gang Court will allow for faster justice, targeted interventions, and stronger enforcement where it’s needed most. Some also noted that past States of Emergency helped bring temporary relief to high-crime neighborhoods and formalizing that framework ensures future actions are legally sound.

Despite being outnumbered, the minority did express a growing frustration of living in fear.
