Suspected drug plane found burnt in Toledo District, Belize

A joint task force trekked the jungles of the Toledo District over the weekend where they were able to locate the suspected drug plane that was seen in Belize’s airspace in the early hours of last Tuesday.  Aerial surveillance uncovered an airstrip measuring an estimated one kilometer which led the local authorities to an area between the villages of Corazon Creek and Otoxha.  The authorities were able to uncover an aircraft they believe was burnt after its cargo was unloaded. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Hilberto Romero, explained that an investigation has been launched to ascertain additional information.

ACP Hilberto Romero, Officer Commanding Eastern Division: “Various elements of the Belize Police Department visited an area near Otoxa Village in the Toledo district where the burnt remains of a twin engine aircraft were found. The area was searched thoroughly nothing was found. A review of the area shows that there was an airstrip made in the jungle and that is where the plane landed.”

Reporter: Based on preliminary reports is the police department able to say how many bales of cocaine this aircraft could have carried and does the department believe that the drugs remain in country at this point ?

ACP Hilberto Romero, Officer Commanding Eastern Division: “No I do not have the estimates of what is the capability of that aircraft and again the investigation is ongoing and so far no drugs have been found.”

Reporter: Channel 5 posted that two bodies were found in a shallow grave is that true ?

ACP Hilberto Romero, Officer Commanding Eastern Division: “That is incorrect. No remains of any body was found in that area. The time the information was received based on the radar teams were deployed and from there they were searching. It is a remote area and so it took some time to reach that particular area.”

Again, the reports of human remains found at the plane site were untrue.  As a matter of fact, there was a shallow grave found in the area, but it bore the remains of an animal
