Majority of teachers at the Belmopan Baptist High School (BBHS) executed a sit-out as a form of protest against what they believe to be administrative injustices. This morning at around ten o’clock our newsroom received an anonymous call that teachers from BBHS have organized a sit out due to the new administration not validating to their concerns and frustrations. The person went on to say that for weeks now they have been requesting a meeting with the new principal, upon which she has given them the turnaround, dismissing their request for urgent redress. This afternoon, via the school’s official Facebook page, an press release was issued stating that “Our board of directors is in communication with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, administration, staff and other stakeholders in education to address today’s situation. Our school had a full day with students fully engaged and teacher conferences with parents.” We have since been informed by the anonymous source that quote “the press release is not entirely true as the students have been placed under the compound chapel area gazebo and have been watching movies all day.” End of quote. The sit out is seeing the participation of 80% of a staff of about 21 teachers. Our newsroom understands that the teachers have sought advice from the union on speaking with the media at a later date. Our Belmopan Correspondent visited the institution earlier today and was unable to get comments from the administration. Notably, the institution changed its principal for this new academic year in the name of Maureen Arnold Neal. We have been notified that after our correspondent left, the gates were locked and bolted, and school is going as usual. The strike action is expected to continue Friday.
