Teen Slain in the City

Two Belize City youth were fatal shot on Monday. One of them is Erwin Pitter. The body of the 19-year-old Belize City youth of Southside was found on Giles Street a little after ten pm. He was shot several times by a person driving an unknown vehicle which was pursued by police. Reporter Vejea Alvarez spoke to the victim’s family.

Luanne Sandoval, Sister of Deceased:I was on the verandah last night. We heard the gunshot and, to God, we wouldn’t have thought it was Erwin.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love FM News:  The family of Erwin Pitter is at a loss for words after the 19 year old was shot and killed while going to buy food in Belize City. According to Police Press Officer, ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, Pitter was riding on Giles St. sometime after 10:00 when he became the target of gunmen in an unknown vehicle.

ASP. Fitzroy Yearwood, Public Relations, Belize Police Department: Pitter left from an area on Holy Emmanuel St. sometime after 10 to go and purchase food on, and upon reaching that location a vehicle approached him and several shots were fired in his direction causing his fatal injury.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love FM News:  Luanne Sandoval, one of Pitter’s older sisters, says when he left home yesterday evening, he told them he was going to the Digi Park. She says they had no idea he was killed until this morning when police showed up at their front door.

Luanne Sandoval, Sister of Deceased: “We went to sleep probably after 11 to get up to have the police banging on here and asking us where everybody who lives here was. We said right here. So they said “Everybody?” So we said yes only Erwin isn’t here because he went to beat drums. So they said “Okay, what did Erwin leave from here in?” so I told them “A black shirt.” The police said “A jogger’s pants and a Nike tennis?” I said “Yes!” So the police said “It’s him.” So we said “It’s him what?” He said “It’s him they killed.” We said “Where?” You know? Because, it’s surprising because he went to beat out at the park, at the park. I don’t know how he reached behind Martin’s yet.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love FM News:  Another of Pitter’s sisters, Brittany Jones, says that her brother was a humble person who didn’t trouble anyone. According to her, Pitter was in the area playing the drums when he was slain.

Brittany Jones, SIster of Deceased: He doesn’t have friends. He doesn’t hang out. He doesn’t go anywhere. He is from work to home. He doesn’t go anywhere to say well they want to hurt him. He is somebody. He beats drums. He likes to have fun. He likes when you’re happy. If you’re somebody who is always down, he always builds you up. He always has you laughing. Happy. He would take out his last and give it to you. So, at the end of the day, we would want to know what they killed him for because we don’t know. At the end of the day, I heard he was beating drums behind Martin’s where they killed him. He was beating drums.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love FM News:  Jones says that their father died less than four months ago and her brother’s death has once again torn a hole in her heart. The family is now seeking the public’s assistance in bringing Pitter’s killer to justice.

Brittany Jones, SIster of Deceased: “We want to know why and why so brutal, because they chanced him. It is chance they chanced him. At the end of the day, we don’t deserve this so whosoever did it, I just want them to know, we have left it in God’s hands. He will make everything happen. The person who killed my brother will not be able to sleep. They will have nightmares. You understand? And at the end of the day, we need the police or anybody who knows anything, or saw him, or anything, just link the police and let them know because we want justice.”
