Temporary Cease-Fire Declared in Israel-Hamas Conflict

Temporary Cease-Fire Declared in Israel-Hamas Conflict

While governments across the globe continue to call for permanent peace in the Middle East, tonight, there are plans for a temporary cease-fire. Less than twenty-four hours ago, Israel and Hamas agreed to a four-day halt of the conflict that has left many in utter despair. The deal includes the release of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel and the release of hostages held by the terror group. The pause in fighting will also allow for fuel and humanitarian aid into Gaza. Prime Minister John Briceno says that he hopes that the move will allow for cooler heads to prevail and for the war to end.

Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “Well it is a start. Obviously any ceasefire if it is for one day it is a start but it is not enough. We need to do more and we need to have a permanent ceasefire and then start to see how is it that we’re going to rebuild Palestine. We need to stop these Israeli government or the right wing faction of the government to continue to go into Gaza, to go into the West Bank and actually take Palestinian land. These things need to stop and the Palestinian rights need to be protected at all times. Well I think the churches are also taking a look strictly from the bible but I believe that our lord did not give a right to anyone to commit genocide on anybody and today we’re seeing that the Israeli government not the people because there are many Israelis that are against the bombardment of Palestine or Gaza. So we are against what the government is doing in government and the churches need to make a differentiation. Well once we believe that there is a ceasefire, because it’s not a permanent it’s just a temporary freezing of the diplomatic relations between both countries but we plan in the future to be able to continue to have diplomatic relations with Israel. I think the Israelis are a good example of what hard work and determination can do to build a country. There’s a lot we can learn from them so we want to have and continue the diplomatic relationship with them but we believe for this moment that we should take a stop and on that relationship temporarily hoping that they could listen to more and more countries asking for a ceasefire.”

Israel currently holds close to 7,000 Palestinians accused or convicted of security offenses and says the truce would be extended by a day for every 10 additional hostages released. Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa says that while it does provide a glimmer of hope, it doesn’t solve the oppressive problems Palestinians have faced for years.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries: “The world is up in arms. The world is saying it is time for a ceasefire. It is time for a cease occupation and it is time for a cease genocide. Cease apartheid. There can be no peace if you do not cease Israel and so it is important for us as Belizeans to stand here in solidarity with all those families on both sides of the divide not just Palestinians but Israeli lives that have been lost as well. There are no winners in this war and so it is important that the super powers call upon Israel and to demand that there be a ceasefire now. I am very encouraged by that news but at the same time it cannot be a temporary ceasefire. It cannot be that I will not kill you at 8am this morning but I will decide to kill you at 8pm tonight, that is a humanitarian pause, that is what they call it and so it cannot be a temporary ceasefire it must be a permanent ceasefire if we are to find this two state solution.”

The deal, brokered by Qatar, the U.S., and Egypt, was made public today.
