Territorial Volunteers Plan Trek to Sarstoon and Garbutt’s Falls

While the Belize National Teachers Union are making plans to have the teachers visit the border areas in southern Belize for educational purposes, Wil Maheia of the Belize Territorial Volunteers has announced the organization of a trek to the border at the mouth of the Sarstoon River.  This trek will take place on April 30 according to a release that the BTV issued earlier today.  In that release, the BTV states, quote, “Amid the most recent acts of aggression by Guatemala in the form of their summarily claiming not only Sarstoon Island, but also the entire Sarstoon river, coupled with the GOB’s continued, wilful negligence concerning all matters involving Guatemala’s intransigence, it is clear that a heightened awareness campaign must be maintained.  In this regard, the Belize Territorial Volunteers (BTV) continue, in earnest, its efforts to sensitise the people of Belize as to the reality of, and situations impacting our borders”  End of quote.  The upcoming trek is being planned to coincide with the 157th anniversary of the signing of the 1859 Treaty between the governments of the UK and Guatemala in which the border between Belize and Guatemala is recognized.  Happening simultaneously with this trek is another, this time by the Northern Territorial Volunteers led by Giovani de la Fuente.  The NTV’s trek will be at the Garbutt Falls monument.
